Will Have to Dig Deep
Consultation, accommodation and other Delgamuukxw directives say we are totally there. We are not against development but the process requires a little respect. We are getting that with the Northwest transmission line, Enbridge, Klappan coal and Avanti mining Inc. All want access to transport their goods or minerals on specific portions of Gitxsan land. They know that it is a part of Canadian law to comply. They are all in development stages, however environmental studies need doing and we have the expertise to do it. We do have policies with any given resource where such things as the importance of water are paramount. We think in terms of gwallaxyee’nst, what our children will inherit.
Today we met with Craig J. Nelson, president and C.E.O. of Avanti mining. He has a proposal to reopen Kitsault mine. This is a mine to extract molybdenum. A mineral used for hard steel products, stainless etc. The mine is in another tribal territory but the company requires access through our country. This visit was to enlighten us on what they plan and how many jobs they expect in phases of construction; they expect 700 jobs during construction, for operation they expect to employ 300 people with half out in the field.
On the overall scheme of things, we need to be ready, this is why were trying to finalize the Gitxsan Development Corporation. To man what needs manning in terms of our future, directors and managers will need to dig deep. This means some can come home if they have that particular expertise. In the corporate world, you cannot be a director if you’re not bankable. More or less squeaky clean , no outstanding bad debt, etc. We want jobs in the big scene, no more small potatoes, right? We really have no time to fight, if we live in a world of inadequacy, then we need to play by the corporate world’s rules of engagement. For the Corporate world, they will not waste their breath on us if they get the vibes that we do not know what we’re doing. As for our own Gitxsan, do it right is what you say and we are trying to do just that.
