Gitxsan Territories
Gitxsan Territories January 4, 2006 The Gitxsan, Gitanyow and Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs are meeting at the Moricetown Gymnasium, on January 10th-11th 2006 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. On the first day there will be an All Clans Feast starting at 5:00 p.m. This gathering marks the first time since Delgamuukw, (1994) that all three groups will be sitting down to discuss concerns facing the environment.
Topics include: Protecting our water; fish farms and the implications to wild fish stocks; Decision making power on our land; the two new documents just released by the government that will effect all First Nations decision making power in British Columbia. The Chiefs together with others of high status and maturity determine the pathway the Wilph must navigate, to insure its well being and sustainability. This meeting will look at sharing information in order for the chiefs to make informed decisions on current issues facing their people. Wet’suwet’en Executive Director Debbie Pierre and Gitanyow’s Glen Williams say “the chiefs are excited about the gathering and sharing of information”. The rekindling of alliances will assist each group to move as one to the next step, in their quest for self-determination. The Gitxsan, Gitanyow and Wet’suwet’en are poised to achieve cooperation with the government “including practical and workable arrangements for land and resource decision-making and sustainable development.”
